Footwork Is The Cheat Code

Everybody works on handles. Almost nobody works on feet. That's the gap — and it's the easiest one to close.

Watch a gym full of hoopers warm up and you’ll see a hundred crossovers and zero pivots. That’s the tell. Handles get the highlight; footwork wins the possession.

Here’s the truth nobody posts: your handle can only do what your feet allow. A clean live-dribble pivot beats a fancy between-the-legs every time, because it buys you the half-second that turns a contested look into an open one.

Three things to drill this week:

  • Jump-stops into both pivots. Catch, plant, and be able to go either foot. Defenders cheat your strong side — punish it.
  • Change of pace before change of direction. Speed is a move. Slow, then go.
  • The reset step. When the play breaks, calm feet keep the possession alive. Panic feet kill it.

It’s not flashy. It won’t get a million views. But it’s the work under the work — and it’s the difference between looking like a hooper and being one. Built in the dark, played in the light.
