How To Actually Use Film (Most People Don't)

Re-watching your highlights isn't film study. Here's how to turn tape into the fastest skill you own.

Most people “watch film” by re-living the dunk. That feels good. It teaches nothing.

Real film study is uncomfortable, because you’re hunting for the version of you that you don’t want to see. The mind above the neck is a skill — and tape is how you train it without running a single sprint.

Watch with a job:

  • Pick one thing. Not “play better.” Watch only your closeouts. Only your first dribble out of a pin-down. One lens per session.
  • Pause before the result. Stop the clip the moment you make the decision, not after the shot. Were you right before you knew the outcome?
  • Count your habits. How many times did you pick up your dribble with nowhere to go? Numbers don’t lie, and they don’t flatter you.

Ten honest minutes of tape can fix what ten thousand reps of the wrong thing can’t. The work nobody sees is sometimes just the work nobody wants to do.
